What is Pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy is a paramedical technique using pressure to stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation. This therapy is performed with large boots, arm sleeves, and an abdominal belt, all worn while lying down.

Pressotherapy is recommended for individuals with circulation issues, water retention, or those looking to improve their fitness. It complements manual lymphatic drainage.

Pressotherapy devices are typically equipped with the following accessories:

  • Leg boots
  • Foot boots
  • Arm sleeves
  • Abdominal and hip belt

What Are the Effects of Pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy can target veins, cellulite, and heavy legs to eliminate water retention and toxins. It also helps prevent the appearance of varicose veins.

Water retention is linked to poor lymphatic circulation, meaning the body retains more water than it expels. This can lead to swelling or edema. Causes of water retention may vary from person to person and can include:

  • Poor blood circulation

  • Heat: Hot baths, clothing, or exposure to the sun can dilate blood vessels, promoting water retention.

  • High salt or low-protein diet: Salt is a major cause of water retention.

  • Certain illnesses: Heart, kidney, or venous insufficiency.

  • Certain medications: Corticosteroids, antihypertensives, or hormonal treatments.

  • Posture: Sitting or crossing the legs can also hinder venous return.

Who Can Benefit from Pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy is suitable for both women and men with circulatory disorders, cellulite, localized fat deposits (e.g., saddlebags, love handles), or heavy legs. It is also beneficial for athletes looking to speed up recovery after exercise.

Contraindications for Pressotherapy

Pressotherapy is not suitable for:
  • Cardiac issues
  • Respiratory problems
  • Venous disorders
  • Conditions contraindicated for pressotherapy: renal insufficiency, diabetes, tuberculosis, tumors, untreated hypertension, phlebitis
  • Physiological states: menstruation, pregnancy, untreated open wounds
